CHEERLEADER69
Godriders in The Sky
LP

Quote from label : "This Cheerleader 69 album, a side-project from vx69, the frontman & singer of the french industrial techno punk machine Punish Yourself, is finally available, digging its inspiration both in the rythms of Test Dept, the ambiances of Coil in their Horse Rotorvator era, and the symphonic lyricism proper to the martial/neoclassing scene. vx69 proposes an excellent record, very personnal & iconoclastic."

BLASPHAMAGOATACHRIST
Black Metal Warfare
Tape

Quote from label: "Consisting of members from the revered cults of Blasphemy, Goatpenis, and Antichrist, Blasphamagoatachrist boasts several decades of collective experience in aural combat, which it brings to bear in this inaugural demo. However, unlike many so-called “super groups,” who often suffer from a lack of cohesive vision and execution in their ranks, this unit has instead harnessed the individual strengths of each constituent and has combined them into a singularly focused entity that transcends the sum of its parts. As implied by the choice of moniker, Blasphamagoatachrist has chosen the most direct path in its nihilistic mission, thus forsaking any false adornments that might dilute its potency. There is no curtain of indiscernible noise behind which the instruments are obscured, as is sometimes the case in this style of black metal. Led by the lethal riffs and occasional solos of Virrigus Apocalli, which deliver the pinpoint ballistic strikes from above, the devastating bass of Sabbaoth and battery of T. Antichrist simultaneously decimate the battlefield below. Immersed in the fray, the war commands are performed by none other than Nocturnal Grave Desecrater and Black Winds, whose delivery remains as powerful as ever. These seven tracks of nuclear assault metal represent the best in the tradition of bestial black metal and portend ominous things to come in the future from these mercenaries, who appear to have now only skimmed the surface of their unquenchable bloodlust".

MOENEN OF XEZBETH
Ancient Spells of Darkness...
Tape

Quote from label: "Conjuring the sinister spirits of yesteryear, Moenen of Xezbeth rises to deliver its first full incantation of mid-paced black metal, “Ancient Spells of Darkness…,” with its seven arcane invocations primed to unleash their plague on all who bear witness. Captured with the same approach and under the same austere conditions as its preceding demo and EP, “Ancient Spells of Darkness…” thus realizes the same unearthly effect, yet it is even more sinister and oppressive. These foreboding hymns serve as a conduit for the return of the original black flame, which was first sparked by Moenen of Xezbeth’s revered forbearers, has since nurtured itself in the underworld, and is now emboldened to return in its dark glory".

XIBALBA ITZAES
Ah Tza
EP

Quote from label: "In the modern world of black metal, where countless bands seem to arise on a daily basis, there appears to be a pervasive drive to release as much music as possible in order to gain the recognition necessary to distinguish one’s name from the masses. For this very reason, it is refreshing when a band resists such temptation and instead exercises the patience that is often necessary to create music of a higher caliber. Such is the case with Xibalba (a.k.a. Xibalba Itzaes), who reemerged after a 14-year leave of absence to release “Demo 2010,” which followed in the strong tradition first established on their original demos from 1992 and 1994 and the masterful debut album, “Ah Dzam Poop Ek,” also from 1994.
As first evidenced on its earliest demo, “In Lucescitae Tristis Hiei,” Xibalba was the first band of its kind to embrace its ancient Mayan heritage and successfully merge it with the rawness of black metal, resulting in a musical style that perfectly reflects the pagan underworld from which the band takes its name and in which the Mayan gods of death exercise their reign over all human suffering and ultimate mortal demise. Although this combination of pagan Mesoamerican culture and metal has become somewhat more popular in this day and age, to such an extent that another band has even co-opted the same moniker, the original Xibalba stands alone in its authenticity and its status as one of the most highly-regarded black metal bands from Mexico. In its roughly nine minutes of duration, “Ah Tza!” confirms that the quality of music is often not necessarily a product of a band’s excessive output, and that although they may have temporarily slumbered, the Mayan death gods have awoken and continue to rule the underworld".

VIRUS
The Black Flux
LP

Quote from label: "The Black Flux was the catharsis of Carl-Michael “Czral” Eide as an artist, writer and performer and it represents a watershed in the field of avantgarde metal / rock. Hailed as “album of the year” in several publications, the album saw the band rise from curious underdogs to recognised innovators. Taking the eccentric guitar disharmonics of Ved Buens Ende beyond a dense maelstrom of sound and placing it within a surprisingly “rock” format, albeit never losing touch with the alien accents of the band’s Carheart debut, The Black Flux is the sound of an organism coming of age and understanding its purpose.
As a somewhat distant but still closely musically-related descendent of Ved Buens Ende, the music of Virus bears a somewhat more striking similarity to “Nothingface”-era Voivod than it does its black metal antecedent. With its generous reliance on an almost mechanized sequencing of dissonant chords and riffs, in confluence with a predominantly bass-driven backdrop, Virus draws an unmistakable influence from Voivod’s more experimental, post-thrash period. At the same time, these recordings exude a darkness that also resembles the prominent involvement of the band’s mastermind, Czral, in Ved Buens Ende, whose vision of black metal already contained traces of a genre-breaking evolution in the mid-1990s. The combination of these influences results in a series of recordings that straddle the boundary between second-wave black metal and one of its early offshoots".

STARGAZER
A Merging to the Boundless - Void of Voyce
LP

With the original version of “A Merging to the Boundless,” first released in early 2015, StarGazer once again garnered deserved accolades as one of the most provocative death metal bands in existence. To an even greater degree than the already grandiose preceding full-lengths, “The Scream that Tore the Sky” and “A Great Work of Ages,” this third album showcased the combined genius of three musicians whose talents have been honed not only as members of StarGazer, but also as contributors to several other well-regarded Australian bands, such as Martire and Mournful Congregation. As evidenced on this most recent album as well as on previous releases, StarGazer’s music is perhaps most conveniently labeled as a sort of avant-garde death metal due to its tendency to venture outside the parameters that traditionally have delimited the subgenre.
Two years after the initial release of “A Merging…,” the band once again has conspired with Nuclear War Now! to re-present this masterpiece, albeit this time in instrumental form, fully stripped of vocals. This version, entitled “A Merging to the Boundless: Void of Voyce,” is anything but a novelty release that is unique only as a superficial variation of the original. On the contrary, this version is akin to a living organism that molts its exoskeleton as a necessary stage in the process of assuming its more mature form. The absence of vocals allows the listener to more fully appreciate the incredibly complex songwriting and impeccable musicianship that are second to none in comparison with StarGazer’s peers. The startlingly skillful alternation between rampantly frenetic tempos and melodic serenity is more readily exposed, and each musical nuance, as subtle as it may be, is more fully uncovered and magnified. Further accentuating this release’s ability to stand on its own is the fully original visual layout that was designed to accompany it. Stefan Thanneur, the musical and artistic mastermind of France’s Chaos Echoes, was commissioned to create a new layout based on his unique aesthetic vision, featuring a silkscreen printed illustration on the outer plastic sleeve that merges perfectly with the A-side center label design when the LP is enclosed within. The result of this stunning package is one that appropriately honors a band that stands apart as true masters of their craft.

LURKER OF CHALICE
Lurker Of Chalice
LP Double Gatefold

Quote from label: "Like Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice is a project conceived of and executed by multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Jef Whitehead, who is generally referred to as Wrest in the context of his music. For nearly 20 years, through his work with Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice, and many other projects, Whitehead has consistently recorded and released music that has unquestionably left permanent scars on the face of the USBM scene. To call Lurker of Chalice a Leviathan side-project would be inaccurate. Though Leviathan is far more prolific and widely known, Wrest’s recordings under the Lurker of Chalice banner are just as earnest and extraordinary. Indeed, to many, the Lurker of Chalice material represents the zenith of Wrest’s vast and superb body of work. The self-titled Lurker of Chalice album, which came out in 2005, was the only widely circulated recording associated with the project, the two previous demos only being released in very limited quantities. The album garnered massive praise before swiftly going out of print, practically ensuring its stature as a cult masterpiece. It would be too simplistic to categorize this album as mere Black Metal because it sweeps so broadly across the musical spectrum; however, even when Wrest strays farthest from Black Metal in a stylistic sense, the sensations and emotions the music conjures are every bit as visceral. Born of true despair, the oppressive weight of anguish looms over the album. A genuine sense of oblivion permeates the atmosphere created by this collection of songs that, taken together, chart a course through the bleakest stations of the soul. Following a comparatively brief introductory track, the album opens with “Piercing Where They Might,” one of two songs on the album that were featured on the “Lurker of Chalice” demo released in 2002. The song begins with what might be the brightest passage on the album, featuring delicate guitar work accentuated by the sounds of birds in the background—this proves to be the first and last glimpse of light the listener will have—before it abruptly shifts, plunging over the blackened horizon into ever more depressive regions. A warped repetitive riff of slow bending notes carries the momentum of the song, causing a temporal distortion as it’s woven into the latticework of a steady blast beat moving four times faster—like the anxious constancy of one’s breath over the percussive fervor of one’s heartbeat. Only one other track, “Granite,” which was also featured on the 2002 demo, can really be described as something like traditional Black Metal, with assertive drums like railroad tracks guiding the movement of the song beneath a canopy of guitars, synthesizers, and ethereal vocals. As the album progresses, its lonely and bruised meanderings persist through stylistic and compositional variations that maintain the album’s allure—from the Funeral Doom aesthetics of “Minions” through the haunting echo chamber of despair evoked by “Paramnesia” to “This Blood Falls as Mortal Part III,” which features a Sylvia Plath spoken word sample amid a melancholy interplay of Eno-esque sustained guitars and synthesizers, to the Neofolk evocations of “Vortex Chalice,” before culminating with the sorrowful ardor of “Fastened to the Five Points.” The album closes unceremoniously, leaving the listener fractured and depleted. At the time of its release, no other album sounded quite like this one, and it’s no exaggeration to say that no comparable release has emerged in the last 12 years since “Lurker of Chalice”; the album truly occupies its own shade along the ever-expanding spectrum of Black Metal".

IRKALLIAN ORACLE
Apollyon
LP Double

Quote from label: "“Apollyon” achieves its effect by dragging the listener down into the most abysmal depths of subconscious oblivion. This descent is blanketed in a palpably dark atmosphere and primarily driven by a unique array of percussive patterns and instrumentation, all of which is complemented by the alternating swelling and contraction of the guitar riffs.
It is, however, with perhaps a hint of irony that this second album eclipses its predecessor in terms of its darkness, given the obvious solar reference in the title “Apollyon” and the previous album’s lunar association. On the other hand, the even more pronounced density of “Apollyon” is appropriate when one recognizes the sun’s role as an active generator of light, an agent of revelation and prophecy, and the absolute state of Being, which are the dominant themes explored in the album’s lyrics and other accompanying texts. Further distinguishing “Apollyon” from “Grave Ekstasis” is the greater degree of focus in its compositions. “Grave Ekstasis,” with its more open approach to the songs’ arrangements, was reflective of a band in its early development, firmly in possession of an unbridled potency but with a somewhat lesser capability to optimally channel this potential. “Apollyon,” on the other hand, demonstrates a musical maturation evidenced by its greater level of systemization and technical advancement, which results in a more cohesive effort overall.
The differences between the two albums notwithstanding, “Apollyon” serves as a natural progression of the meditations begun on “Grave Ekstasis,” and this continuity is further exemplified by having once again chosen artist David Herrerias to visually manifest the band’s aural discourse. Behold the six-fold secret sung by the Abysmal Angel in dedication to the mysteries of the Infernal Sun.

HOLOCAUSTO
Demo
Tape

Quote from label: "Uncertainty has always loomed over Holocausto, and it wasn’t clear when, or if, the band would record again, but they have again assembled to produce a new demo. Recorded with the classic Campo … lineup (Armando Nuclear Soldier replaced Nedson Warfare on drums for this new demo recording), Guerra Total displays an even more genuine 1980s Brazilian sound. Recorded live using open air mics, this demo is raw and menacing in the very same way that the band’s earliest recordings were. Operating in militaristic uniformity, Holocausto’s performance is brilliant and brutal. The riffs are sharp, weaponized. This is the sound that Holocausto and their peers should have produced in the 1990s had they not been derailed. Quite simply, this may very well be the most authentic approximation of the mid-1980s Brazilian sound produced since that era".

HOLOCAUSTO
War Metal Masacre
EP

Quote from label: "“War Metal Massacre,” the band’s sixth album, but only the first since its debut to follow in the Minas Gerais deathcore tradition. Although it is short by modern standards, this album overcompensates in intensity for what it lacks in length, delivering one of the most remarkable and authentic recordings of a reunited metal band in memory. The first three songs, which comprise Side A of the LP version, are re-recordings of the “Massacre” demo track from 1985 and the two tracks first committed to tape on the “Warfare Noise” compilation from 1986. A quick comparison between one of these reinterpreted songs and its original version immediately verifies the band’s return to its roots. Even more importantly, the three new songs on the album confirm Holocausto’s ability to have recaptured its original, feral songwriting capacity. Immediately following the ominous air raid sirens of the intro to Side B, “Eu Sou a Guerra” launches into the same unbridled havoc that characterized their early recordings and one which reflects the orchestrated chaos of true warfare. This aural fury, which appropriately earns the band’s sound the often-misplaced moniker of “war metal,” continues throughout the remainder of the album, a fact which is certain to please the strictest conservationists of old Brazilian black metal. In short, “War Metal Massacre” heralds the second-coming of a band and sound that until now had been expected to exist only as a relic of the past".

WRATHPRAYER /
FORCE OF DARKNESS

Wrath of Darkness - Die Hard Edition
LP

Quote from label: "Chile’s storied history within the greater context of the South American black/death metal underground is extended with “Wrath of Darkness”, a joint LP from two of the country’s most respected current bands, Wrathprayer and Force of Darkness. Whereas most releases of this type are generally regarded as “splits,” owing to the separate nature of each band’s contribution, “Wrath of Darkness” is instead aptly considered a whole work, given the close-knit alliance between the two bands. Each individual element – including the music itself, art direction, and overall thematic concept – was deliberately developed in a collaborative effort involving both entities with the singular goal of producing the most cohesive release possible. Although Wrathprayer and Force of Darkness differ to a noticeable extent in the details of the composition and execution of their music, they are clearly united in that their styles are most firmly rooted in the black metal subgenre. On the one hand, Wrathprayer blends the foreboding nature of black metal with an oppressive, suffocating aura more commonly associated with death metal. Force of Darkness, on the other hand, peppers its interpretation of black metal with an impressive array of razor-sharp, blisteringly-precise riffs that tend to resemble the most evil variants of thrash. The individual contributions by both bands are perfectly bookended and bound by the intro, “Inhaling Wrath,” performed by Wrathprayer, and the outro, “Exhaling Darkness,” performed by Force of Darkness. The five intervening tracks – two by Wrathprayer and three by Force of Darkness – are emblematic of two bands at the creative apex of their existence. Highlighting Wrathprayer’s side of the record is “De Profundis,” which opens with a chorus of desperate cries from the depths of the fiery pit and is then quickly consumed by a swirling maelstrom of aural ire. Force of Darkness then inherits this storm and multiplies it, culminating in “The Order,” a near-seven-minute opus that lays waste to any semblance of meagerness that may have somehow withstood the previous assaults. With the whole of this work greater than the mere sum of its parts, Wrathprayer and Force of Darkness effectively redefine the notion of the split release and instead revive the more noble ideal of true collaboration, in service of darkness and wrath".

RITES OF THY DEGRINGOLADE
The Blade Philosophical
LP

Quote from label: "“The Blade Philosophical” is at once a recapitulation of the band’s earlier work and a continued expansion of the boundaries of extreme metal. It is, in the truest sense, a real album, with common sonic and thematic threads woven throughout, drawing the tracks together into something cohesive and whole. Conceptually, the album is an exposition of the themes that permeate the band’s entire body of work. While many details of the philosophy of Rites remain obscure, the overarching premise emerges: the exaltation of the self—the cultivation of the individual will—to disrupt, navigate, and ultimately control the ever-flowing streams of determinism. “The Blade Philosophical,” Kressman elaborates, “is the study and catharsis in the constant state of will—deterministic all, and the self as creator and destroyer.” The sound of Rites has always been distinctive—the band is one of a handful that can be honestly characterized as unique. On this album, the full spectrum of the band’s sound is on violent display. Kressman’s frenetic percussion and the low-end guitars form a tangled and tense knot at the core, that is draped and gilded with shimmering contrapuntal melodies delivered by Wroth and N.K.L.H. The organic fibers of Rites’ sound remain in omnipresent tension with the grinding mechanistic and boldly physical elements. The sprawling universe suspended in death-black paralysis. The misshapen spine of the cosmos dissected in the mind of man. “The Blade Philosophical” is a controlled descent into the orgiastic field of rape and disorder called the world and the corresponding ascendency of the individual from within".

MORBOSIDAD
Corona de Epidemia
CD

Quote from label: "Corona de Epidemia,” the fifth album in Morbosidad’s unyielding discography and one which reaffirms the band’s revered status. Unlike many highly-respected bands who release an acclaimed masterpiece along with an additional solid album or two before fading into the obscurity of forgettable later recordings, “Corona de Epidemia” maintains the same degree of songwriting, musicianship, and overall hostility that have characterized Morbosidad’s previous recordings. The most unmistakable constant between this album and the others is Stench’s signature vitriolic vocal assault, which is as potent as ever. As always, his lyrics are written in Spanish, which is an appropriate vehicle for his venomous blasphemies, given the language’s history as a direct descendent of the Latin tongue spoken by the crucifiers of Jesus Christ. Joining him on this album is a lineup once again partially revamped since the “Tortura” EP, which is comprised of Joe Necro (guitars/bass), Matt Mayhem (drums), and Ded Ted (bass). Like “Tortura,” this album was recorded by Irving Lopez at Imperial Mind Engineering in Dallas, Texas. The result is a production that, much like “Tortura,” is deeper and fuller than that of the preceding album, “Muerte de Cristo en Golgota,” and thus enhances the violent delivery of the vocals and drums in particular. Continuing a practice also established on the “Tortura” EP, on which the infamous Chris Reifert of Autopsy joined the band for guest vocals on the final track, Sodomatic Slaughter of Beherit was invited to record the drums on the closing track of “Corona de Epidemia.” These appearances by such honored guests are a testament to the respect that Morbosidad has earned from its peers and fans alike. Originally released jointly by NWN! and Boris Records as a limited-edition LP with alternate cover to celebrate the band’s performance at the Mass Destruction Metal Fest in Atlanta in November of 2017, “Corona de Epidemia” is hereby released with a more comprehensive layout featuring yet another work of art from Chris Moyen, who has served as the illustrator-in-chief for many of the band’s recorded works and has once again perfectly captured in image the band’s doctrine of contempt for the Bastard Son and his meager flock".

KNELT ROTE
Insignificance
CD

The music of Knelt Rote defies easy classification. The band is clearly heavily influenced by the darker elements of Death and Black Metal, the more vicious strains of Grindcore and Punk, and the brutal nihilism of Harsh Noise and Industrial Music. Consequently, the three tracks on the band’s second album, “Insignificance,” bare the markings of each of these sub-genres of extreme music. While the merging of disparate sounds is often a dodgy venture, unlike most bands that try and fail in this endeavor, Knelt Rote do not attempt to sew together a patchwork of ideas. Rather, the band’s union of styles comes across more as superimposition with the resultant image being one that displays the commonalities of each of those various facets of expression. In this way, Knelt Rote defy the homogeneity that infects a great deal of the music being made in each of the aforementioned categories of music. The band nonetheless maintains a sense of purpose that unifies their work. When listening to “Insignificance” one never gets the sense that the band is trying too hard to push boundaries. Instead, the sounds presented on the album feel like the natural emanations of the minds involved in its creation with myriad ideas interwoven like tentacles attached to the same massive beast.

Alterity
LP

Quote from label: "“Alterity,” Knelt Rote’s fourth album and one that continues along the same trajectory established by the previous sequence of recordings. The devastation wrought by the incessant percussive barrage and grinding guitars on “Alterity” is matched by the dark introspection into the human condition that it endeavors to navigate. The lyrics explore such themes as social dissolution, identity, mental illness, obsession and suicide in the context of fatalism and inevitability, as opposed to personal agency. The music reflects the complete removal of will in situations typically associated with decision-making and understandable causation, leaving one to question how much control he has over his fate in an environment so maligned with threats to self-preservation. The vaguely ominous artwork that adorns the cover and accompanying booklet serves to magnify this doubt, casting a web that promises to entangle any who hope to escape their imperiled existence".

ILL OMEN
AE.Thy.Rift
LP

Quote from label: "As with Ill Omen’s previous output, “Æ.Thy.Rift” exudes an organic continuity within each song and across all tracks on the album, which is an outcome often not realized when multiple songwriters and musicians are employed. This consistency is achieved by the implementation throughout of dual bass guitar layers (one clean and one distorted), notably skeletal percussion, the churning, choir-like atmosphere of tremolo-picked guitars, and a blend of chanted, whispered, and traditional black metal vocals. The singularity of this release is further cemented by the lack of distinction in track titles, a characteristic which serves to present the album as a sum of inseparable parts. In other words, and especially given the ritual-like quality of the record in its entirety, it is safe to interpret each track as a necessary component of a collective opus whose individual pieces were not created with the ability to sustain themselves independently of the work as a whole. What most readily sets this particular release apart from previous Ill Omen recordings is a more dedicated adherence to slower, more doom-oriented tempos, which are very well suited to this ceremonial variety of black metal. The listener may very well be left with the impression that this is the soundtrack in the mind of a disease-ridden being on its deathbed, at times feeling an almost celestial bliss at peace with the impending end of suffering, but at other times tormented by the physical and spiritual decay that will inevitably lead to its ruin".

ILL OMEN
Compendium Melificarum - Esoterica
CD

Quote from label: "'The world is a theater and human life is the boundary of all worldly things. Life is the personification of vanity. Death breaks and dissolves the illusion and is the boundary of all mortal things. Let those who visit this place ponder well these maxims and carry them with lively remembrance of death...'

(Description by C. Conrad)
These are the words chosen by Ill Omen's sole member, IV, to preface the recordings contained in Compendium Melificarum – Esoterica, a collection of demo, rehearsal, live, and split tracks from the band's archive. N With the current release, the listener is invited to take another step back to recordings that represent some of the more formative years of the band's development. Although these recordings predate those of the aforementioned NWN releases, the trademarks of Ill Omen's sound had already been clearly established. As such, listeners who have only come to appreciate Ill Omen due to their acquaintance with the more recent recordings are sure to not be disappointed. Present are the familiar low-to-mid tempos punctuated by the voluminous and echoing bass lines, as well as the ubiquitously shimmering and refracting strata of guitar tones that weave in and out of each other before seemingly dissipating into nothingness, all of which is complemented by IV's afflicted vocal delivery. With this release, Ill Omen confirms that quality in consistency is best achieved with an effective original recipe".

AE.Thy.Rift

DOOMBRINGER
Walpurgis Fires
CD

Quote from label: "For over a decade, Poland’s Doombringer has consistently produced a hybrid strain of extreme sound: the stalwart machinery of death metal adorned in the opaque cloth of black metal. With only two demos and a few EP tracks foreshadowing its debut album, the band’s sparse discography is a testament to the meticulous curation of its body of work. It has now been nearly five years since Doombringer released its first full-length, The Grand Sabbath, and the band’s second album, Walpurgis Fires, demonstrates its substantial progress while retaining the band’s notable traits. Perhaps the most exceptional element of Doombringer’s sound is its sheer unpredictability—the failure to adhere to a particular formula. Tempos shift suddenly, melodies dissolve and coalesce, and the vocals vary wildly across a broad spectrum of styles. Notwithstanding the diversity of tools in Doombringer’s arsenal, the end result is integrated and unified. As is customary for the band, Doombringer wrote Walpurgis Fires over an extended period of time between the fall of 2017 and the spring of 2018. The dedication to composition is obvious; the songs are complex, unique, and all flow seamlessly together as an album. The lyrics, laden with occult inspiration and influence, were written in tandem with the music in correlation with the atmosphere evoked by the instrumentation. Conceptually, Doombringer draws influence from medieval literary and artistic depictions of the witches Sabbath, and, as with the band’s prior releases, the influence of Polish folklore and music is also always present, in both the lyrics and the music—the ancient feeling interwoven with, and superimposed upon, the nightmarish horror of the present. Following that extended period of composition and perfection of the songs, Doombringer recorded the album in late 2018 at the band’s Black Lodge studio in Poland, and later added lead guitars at Fireball Studios in Greece. Haunted with visions inspired by the recording, Marko Marov, a visual artist with whom the band has a long-standing relationship (he is responsible for most of the artwork featured on Doombringer’s recent releases), masterfully illustrated and designed the jacket. Walpurgis Fires is a monumental work, the culmination of everything the band has done up to this point and an ominous vision of the darkness the band will continue to summon forth".

CENOTAPHE
Empyree
MLP

Quote from label: "Over the last several years, France’s Cénotaphe have unassumingly become one of the most promising new voices in black metal. Operating as a duo—each member with a long and distinguished résumé trailing behind him—multi-instrumentalist Fog performs all of the music, while Khaosgott handles the vocals. The band’s auspicious prior releases (a demo from 2015 and the 2018 Horizons MLP, both on the Finnish label Kuunpalvelus) established a foundation for the band to build upon, and the result is the magnificent Empyrée MLP. In both content and spirit, Cénotaphe draws inspiration from a constellation of 19th century French literary and artistic figures, such as Aloysius Bertrand, Théophile Gautier, Charles Beaudelaire, and the painter, Odilon Redon. It is, however, the poet, Stéphane Mallarmé, who casts the longest shadow over the band. Mallarmé’s work is dense with inscrutable and tangled syntax, every poem an arcane cipher; however, despite his modern and unconventional style, Mallarmé tended to rely on stalwart and traditional poetic forms, like the sonnet. Within the framework of these rigid poetic structures, Mallarmé’s language was itself unconstrained, abstract, exquisitely lawless, but also excruciatingly methodical and intentional.
There is a similar sensibility to Cénotaphe’s work. Regarded from a distance, one might not notice the idiosyncratic details that permeate it because the band remains so true to the form and spirit of black metal. But ensconced within the traditional structure of Cénotaphe’s songs are fractured melodies, disharmonies, sowing atonal discord under the surface of the song, like a violent undertow beneath a seemingly serene sea. The songs on this MLP all have an epic quality to them, and yet, none clocks in at more than seven minutes. The grandiosity of the tracks derives from their strength of composition, not overindulgence. The riffs are expansive, stretching out across the roiling pulse of the drums. The vocals, delivered entirely in French, hang in suspended animation, puncturing the surface of the song at precise points. Occasionally, the band modifies its approach, fleshing out the sound with keyboard flourishes or other instrumentation, but noticeably eschewing the use of guitar solos, despite being clearly in possession of the necessary skill. Nothing feels unintentional about Empyrée; it is a highly sculpted aesthetic creation. The album closes with a curious climax, a track that perhaps offers additional clues about the band’s musical interests: a near-instrumental cover of “End of the World” by the 1960’s Greek prog pioneers, Aphrodite’s Child, known for being Vangelis’ first band. Beginning slow, much the same as the original, the song evolves and accelerates, deftly bringing the album to a frantic crescendo, punctuated with piano notes and wordless vocals. Tying the album together is the cover art, a piece from 1893 entitled “In the Dust Cloud” by the Polish symbolist painter Jacek Malczewski".

CHAOS ECHOES
Parisian Sessions / Rehearsal I
LP

Quote from label: "Prior to the release of “Transient,” the band’s formative years yielded a series of three limited releases that, while worthy in their own right, also now serve to retrospectively shed light on the improvisational, creative process that resulted in the early EP, “Tone of Things to Come,” and this year’s masterpiece album. Nuclear War Now! is again honored to partner with Chaos Echoes in the reissue of these three releases, known heretofore collectively as “The Occursus Series.” The earliest of these recordings, “Parisian Sessions / Rehearsal I,” documents the very first session that Chaos Echoes ever played in January 2012. The four improvisations contained within were developed following the blueprint drawn by brothers and bandmates, Ilmar and Kalevi Uibo. “Weather the Storm,” as recorded in this rehearsal session, is an embryonic version of the same song that later evolved and was re-recorded as the final track on the “Tone of Things to Come” EP. Several months later, in August of the same year, the “Duo Experience / Spectral Affinities” recording emerged from a session involving only Ilmar and Kalevi as a duo. This sort of minimalist arrangement was envisioned early in the band’s existence, as it was agreed upon from the outset that the composition of Chaos Echoes would take many forms depending on purpose and circumstance. “Duo Experience / Spectral Affinities” offers a different facet of Chaos Echoes’ music, which in this case is characterized by the experimental ambiances and soundscapes of entirely free-form improvisations. The third and final installment in this series, “A Voiceless Ritual,” was recorded live at La Boule Noire in Paris on September 28, 2013, as a testimony of the band’s first concert with a full lineup. The set consisted of instrumental versions of four songs from the “Tone of Things to Come” EP, all rearranged for the live set, in addition to a brand-new and fully-improvised track entitled “Interzone III: La Boule Noire.”

CHAOS ECHOES
Transient - Die Hard Edition
LP Double Gatefold

Quote from label: "Die hard edition on clear vinyl with a woven patch and a vinyl sticker. Housed in a clothbound casewrapped jacket stamped with black foil, featuring different artwork from the standard vinyl edition. Includes the same 20-page 12"x12" booklet with spot varnish as the standard vinyl edition.

(Description by J. Campbell)

Deriving their name from the last album by their predecessors, Bloody Sign, Chaos Echoes established themselves as France’s masters of Avant Garde Death after quietly releasing a series of EPs featuring the band’s characteristically unorthodox material. Combining magnificent complexity, an exceptionally high degree of musicianship, and a distinct sense of experimentalism, Chaos Echoes is among the most captivating bands in the underground – a band truly incapable of simple categorization. “Transient” reflects the culmination of Chaos Echoes’ work to date. The album is undeniably unique, yet also firmly rooted in the spirit and substance of metal. It is not the product of outsiders peering into and misappropriating metal elements in the service of some impotent simulacra; rather, “Transient” reflects Chaos Echoes’ deep reverence for Death Metal, their passage through the depths of the genre, and the band’s emergence from its depths to peer beyond. The album is meant to be absorbed as one continuous experience as each of the tracks blends seamlessly into the next. Continuing with the pattern developed on previous releases, the more focused and aggressive tracks on “Transient” are held together by the threads of long, ritualistic, and haunting tracks presented in sequence and referred to, in Burroughsian fashion, as “Interzones.” While the album is rich with an atmosphere of intentional experimentation, the focused intensity of tracks such as “Advent of my Genesis” and the frenetic ecstasy of the climactic closing track, “Soul Ruiner,” reveal the detailed composition and calculated precision of “Transient.” As with all of their previous recordings, the music is the undeniable focus of the release, but it is not intended to be regarded in a vacuum; rather, Chaos Echoes puts nearly as much emphasis upon the accompanying visual content (created by Chaos Echoes bassist and accomplished visual artist, Stefan Thanneur). “Transient” is, by far, the most visually ambitious release in Chaos Echoes’ catalog. Accompanying the LP is a 20-page booklet featuring artwork created specifically as an extension of the band’s sonic explorations. Regarded as a whole, “Transient” is unlike any other metal release to date. A perfect synthesis of conservative reverence for tradition and iconoclastic novelty, Chaos Echoes accomplishes with this album something that, arguably, no band has ever successfully done before".

Mouvement
LP Gatefold

Quote from label: "With the 2015 release of their debut album, “Transient,” Chaos Echœs established themselves as not only one of the most unique bands on the NWN! roster, but one of the most truly innovative bands in the underground metal scene at large—a status reinforced with the release of their second album, "Mouvement." Chaos Echœs continues the psychological and spiritual explorations pursued with their previous works, but whereas the focus of “Transient” was on the individual and the internal forces operating within, “Mouvement” explores the effect of the external on the self—the sharpening of the individual will against the coarse whetstone of world. The music traces a narrative arc, and, other than the break between the sides of the LP, the segments of the composition are seamlessly merged together to create a single piece of music. “Mouvement” begins with a frantic maelstrom of serpentine guitars coiled into a tight knot of anxiety and claustrophobia. The atmosphere is hostile and unsettling. As the first side of the LP progresses, the tension is brought to a boil and then dissipates, carried by an undertow of melancholy into a sea of anguish. Here, the band demonstrates its unique ability to orchestrate dissonance, to weave the frayed threads of entropy into a sprawling and bleak tapestry of emptiness. As the side closes, the mood becomes detached and introverted, a tangle of melodies set adrift in a cavernous bed of reverb draped across a lopsided frame of freeform percussion. The second side of the album opens with the band moving in unison around a snarling riff. It is a willful confrontation, a display of strength in the face of the corrosive forces all around. By the midway point of the side, however, the music becomes repetitious and hypnotic. The cacophony that characterized the earlier portion of the album evaporates into a hazy, ritualistic trance as the individual transcends the world around him. Voices cut through the miasmic field—chanting, conjuring, summoning—guiding the album into a more meditative space. As the side ends, these voices are all that remain. “Mouvement” was meticulously composed and painstakingly recorded, mixed, and edited over the span of two years. The band’s attention to detail is apparent and the impact of the album is stunning. As on “Transient,” the tracks on the new album are structured and stitched together into a larger form such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And as with all Chaos Echœs releases, the accompanying visual artwork, created by Stefan Thanneur, is as magnificent and intrinsic to the impact of the release as the music itself".

BUNKUR /
MORDOR

Split
LP

Quote from label: "For its contribution, Bunkur chose Carnivore’s “The Subhuman,” as released on the band’s first recording, “Demo ’84.” With the original song clocking in at just over eleven minutes, it is almost certainly the most logical selection from Carnivore’s discography, given Bunkur’s penchant for maximizing the potential for each droning note and vocal wail, and the space in between them, with the result being single songs that have been known to span the duration of entire hour-plus-long albums. In this particular case, “The Subhuman” has been slowed to a pace that essentially doubles the length of the original and, to the uninitiated, might obfuscate the source of its inspiration. Mordor, on the other hand, chose to reinvent “In League with Satan,” a song the band considers to be the heaviest from the immortal Venom’s debut album, “Welcome to Hell.” Drawing heavily on the influence of Laibach’s unique martial/industrial/neoclassical style, Mordor has not only extended the song from its original three-and-a-half minutes to a previously-unimaginable sixteen-and-a-half minutes, but it has also rebranded the song “In League with Wotan.” Beyond simply renaming the track, its thematic focus has appropriately shifted from one of Satanism to one of reverence toward northern Germanic tradition and is thus dedicated to the Lord of Valhalla. Despite the fact that numerous other bands had already covered “In League with Satan,” Mordor’s version incorporates a dramatically new arrangement and rewritten lyrics to match its shift in theme. The combination of these two tracks yields a product that pays homage to our metal heritage and at the same time reaffirms the status of two of the current day’s most innovative and experimental doom bands".

ADVERSARIAL /
ANTEDILUVIAN

Split
CD

Quote from label: "This split LP is much more than merely two bands each taking up a side of a record. It reflects the arduous process of uniting and focusing two distinct forces into a single syncretic expression. The bands collaborated thematically to produce a masterpiece, the whole of which is greater than the sum of its parts. Conceptually, the album synthesizes and contrasts the symbol of Leviathan with that of Lucifer. Side “Leviathan,” featuring the work of Adversarial, is an exploration of abyssic realms–both internal/microcosmic as well as external/macrocosmic. The serpentine coil of DNA. The world serpent consuming itself. Side “Lucifer,” performed by Antediluvian focuses upon Promethean flame. Solar illumination threaded into synaptic transmission. Charged fields. The ionic path joining that which is above to that which is below. Musically, this LP is incomparable. The bands’ distinctive styles merge into a focused composite image. Both Adversarial and Antediluvian incorporate a wealth of subtle details into their music, the accretion of which adds levels of depth and dimension to the bands’ music that sets them apart from their peers. For its part, Adversarial delivers three tracks that are easily the best material the band has yet released. Featuring much stronger production than the band’s previous work, the music on “Leviathan” revels in shimmering contrapuntal guitar riffs set against the savage fervor of the percussion and bass. Adversarial strikes a unique and peculiar discordance which, at times, is evocative of Voivod yet presented within a darker Death Metal context. Antediluvian here continue to pursue a style ever more dense, unpredictable, and arcane. Antediluvian’s trademark shifting temporal disorientation and effulgent sparks of spatial distortion are present in abundance. This LP is intended to be consumed in a single listen. Each band’s approach to the musical and lyrical themes complements the other and the resulting visions are both wretched and luminous".

Going straight to the point, fierce and simple, the compositions are stripped away of all complications, coming with poisonous melodies and a ferocious grace.
With spotlighted vocals and lyrics haunted by cockroaches and nasty things, this album is the most aggressive and heavy JESSICA93 record but also its most accessible to date! Despite its live backing band, « Guilty Species » was fully recorded by Geoffroy Laporte on his own in a total analog way by Vincent Gregorio (Les Etablissements Montasson & Fils".

JESSICA 93
Guilty Species
CD

Quote from label: "Now JESSICA93 records are expected and long-awaited. Just to be clear, « Guilty Species » won't let you down. Those who hated « Who Cares? » and « Rise » will have more reasons to keep doing so. The others, the ones who kept listening to them again and again, will have new reasons to get
excited. More straightforward, more effective, much more disillusioned, this fourth album sees JESSICA93 moving on with its most interesting evolution to date. Going straight to the point, fierce and simple, the compositions are stripped away of all complications, coming with poisonous melodies and a ferocious grace.

BAGARRE GENERALE
Tohu-Bohu
LP

Quote from label: "After their first full lenght record released in 2012 by Radar Swarm Records and a split LP with YEAR OF NO LIGHT, here is the BAGARRE GENERALE sophomore album. Since five years and some lineup changes, the music of BAGARRE GENERALE becomes harder and more aggressive with a heavy drums-bass section still guided by ethereal guitars and loud brass instruments which make the band unique. The three long tracks are a real trip to the band universe and sound like a post metal soundtrack composed for a an old peplum movie."

"A monument of horrid Death Metal, as macabre as it is disgusting. Obscene violence and suffocating atmospheres entangled in multiple poisoned layers of perception... heretic and perverse scriptures deranged over 16 pages of bottomless perdition. A menacing experience rooted in an ancient past, yet a renewal by its burning extremism."

Serpent's Chalice - Materia Prima
CD Digipack

Quote from EAL : "Serpent’s Chalice – Materia Prima is a desolate contemplation on the corrupted depths of the human subconscious and the ever growing materialisation of the averse forces, the primeval chaos that lurks behind the veil. Summoning multiple layers of atmospheres and glacial violence for about 23 admirable minutes, Serpent’s Chalice – Materia Prima displays a frantic compositional mastery."

MONARCH
Die Tonight
LP

Quote from label: "This is the 2015 repress edition on Musicfearsatan.
Two new songs clocking at ca. 20 minutes each, starting off where the "speak of the sea" ones left. Very similar in sound and shape, sort of a continuation. An apocalyptical, suffocating and terrifying sound which emanates from their Sunno and Sovtek amps, from their impossible-tempo war drums, and from the ripping throat of the warrior queen. Nonetheless Monarch have been compared to the legends of this genre (Corrupted, Burning Witch, Sunno, etc.), and record after record, Monarch are proving these comparisons are accurate and true."

FUNERAL MIST
Maranatha
CD

"Funeral Mist manifests rarely but when it does, then it is in exceptional glory. While the taint of the pandemonium that was "Salvation" is to never disappear, for it undeniably set new standards within Black Metal and beyond in terms of musical violence, chaos and the channelling of ominous spiritual energies, "Maranatha" materializes like the unadulterated omen of the end of times, like a glowing pitch black pit to whose appeal to jump within nothing can resist. The violence and the musically bizarre are still there, displayed with a rare mastery but a thorough work on atmospheres and structures and the addition of complex layers of ill sounds make this new album by Funeral Mist a renewed challenging experience, as perilous for your mind's sanity as it is for your soul's deliverance. Unique, unmistakable for anything else, Funeral Mist stands with splendour as the epitome of extremism. It is only way beyond one's limits that an encounter with the dimension summoned by "Maranatha" is made possible, an encounter as perilous as this work is cruel."

ARDITI
Standards of Triumph
CD Digipack

Quote from label: "Boasting the unique personality of this Swedish combo, "Standards of Triumph" taps further into the darker tones of Militaristic Neo-Classical ambiance that has become the band's trademark, resulting in their strongest effort so far - ever effective in their use of crushing orchestrations and evocative speeches, Arditi hereby drags the listener around muddy trenches, leaving aside overly pompous festive marches or alcohol fueled merry bunker songs which seem to have become the norm as of late, and casting an hypnotizing veil over the turmoil of warfare-inspired Industrial soundscapes".

LEIDUNGR
De Nio Kraftsångerna
CD Digipack

Quote from label: "
“De Nio Kraftsångerna” is the long awaited debut album by LEIDUNGR, the latest project by H. Möller (of ARDITI and PUISSANCE), M. Belfagor (of NEFANDUS and OFERMOD) and P. Ståhl.

Crafted by weaving ritual elements into traditional folk, the trinity's mesmerizing work is also imbued with an indelible martial aura which reinforces the underlying heroic mood summoned on these recordings. The potent and evocative combination, which spreads across various genres, often re-creating their common formats, allows LEIDUNGR to carve their unique brand of Nordic Ritual Folk - a term which perfectly defines the genuine atmosphere of this work, now finally available on matt varnished Digipak CD with copper printing, featuring artwork by Freki Wodenswolf, a talented artist known his unique handcrafted creations, made from natural materials as leather, wood, horn, bone and metal".

POMBAGIRA
Flesh Throne Press
LP Double

Quote from label: "Musically, this album projects Pombagira forward with a mind-expanding purpose for exposing the body to a varied compositional range. When it is heavy, it obliterates in an avalanche of riff-making, and when in full tilt, it is only matched by the orchestral quality produced by tracking six amps and cabs for every guitar take.

Embodying both aspects of ingress and egress, this new album will present a more psych-o-delic side to Pombagira‘s music, as they find innovative ways to evolve their sound. In an attempt to bind the sorcerer to the spirit entourage that comes from taking every deviation, Flesh Throne Press explores the “nightside” like no other".

IRON FIST OF THE SUN

LP

Quote from label: "In a scene dominated by outsiders, Iron Fist Of The Sun still seems to stand alone. “We Can Yield Our Own Footsteps” sees IFOTS maintain his exemplary, melancholic, cold industrial, with sinister frequencies and tumultuous, mutilated vocals.
