ESCARRE
Une voûte sans clef
CD

Quote from label: "Drawing from a plethora of musical vocabularies to deliver an eerie and disturbing climate, Escarre could be considered as an avant-garde metal band. Very personal themes adresse the concepts of disease, drugs and spiritual visions. Ranging from calm moments to harsh ambiances, the intention is to initiate a mystical musical pilgrimage, through a misty and convoluted landscape. Experimentation and the refusal of dogmas are the cornerstones of our approach. Drawing influences from artists such as Ved Buens Ende, 8 bit music and Radiohead, Escarre displays a destabilizing and cathartic portrait."

FILIVS MACROCOSMI & CHARADRIIFORM
Ex Vivo
CD Slim Plastic

Quote from label: "Since the beginning of time mankind has been fascinated by Space. Few has not dreamed of going to the moon, or to become an astronaut and leavehis mark on Mars, While being a child. In 1961, the technical genius of Soviet scientists proved that man can master the cosmos. But how many people think about the fact that in addition to the celebrations, glory and indescribable feelings, a flight beyond Earth may bring pain, suffering, madness? In our work Ex Vivo (Lat. "from life"), we would like to reveal all the faces of flights, which are not talked about - loneliness, isolation from the usual things, the incredible closeness of death and an endless cold abyss of the universe, which stares at astronaut. We have tried to convey and express the feelings that a person experiences at start of the machine and to the point where he can no longer distinguish the picture generated by his imagination from reality. The tranquility that ends the album in any case should not be understood as an obituary. It is rather a hymn of praise to the birth of a man who understood and took for himself a place that was defined for him by the universe."

GELSOMINA
Pythogenetics: Collection
CD

Quote from label: "Since the early 2000's, up until the UK tour in the summer of 2008, Gelsomina has been the musical outlet of Finnish Harsh Noise fiend, Pekka PT. A brutal mix of junk metal abuse and pedal worship, sometimes resulting in total unflinching chaos and other times resulting in a more structured industrial noise masterwork. Having released dozen's of tapes, cd's and vinyl it was never going to be an easy task to wittle it all down to CD length but through the critical eyes of the man himself, Pekka has managed to pull together 74 minutes of what he considers the best of his Gelsomina, and I couldn't agree more. Featuring a full colour tray card and 4 page booklet with liner notes by Mikko Aspa (Grunt/Freak Animal Records) and Pasi Markkula (Bizarre Uproar/Filth and Violence). Essential Harsh Noise document by a now defunct but legendary project. But it's not all bad Watch out, Sick Seed is on the rise!"

GNAW THEIR TONGUES
All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity
CD Digipack

Picking up where 2008's An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood left off, Gnaw Their Tongues is back with nine new tracks of fearsome blackened orchestral chaos and abstract horror that still sounds like little else out there. On Dread, we're feeling an even heavier bass-assault compared to the other releases, and this is easily the heaviest Gnaw Their Tongues release yet. This monstrous, noxious bottom-end roar that skulks and slithers throughout the album suggests a foul fusion of Abruptum (which is still the closest reference point to Gnaw Their Tongue's black chaos) and Leonard Rosenman's most nightmarish film scores, piled in towering heaps of sadistic noise, warped orchestral strings, degraded samples, shrieking voices, and punishing lurching doom draped in suffocating atrmosphere. Hyper-abstract black metal sound-collage? Wagnerian avant-doom psychosis? That's one way of putting it, but Gnaw Their Tongues is ultimately impossible to pin down, defying simple categorization as this album plunges even deeper into a black pit of total cinematic horror, sexual perversion, and shapeless heaviosity.
Once again, we've presented the cd version of this album in a deluxe heavyweight tip-on gatefold sleeve manufactured by Stoughton, exactly the same as the sort that we used for the cd release of An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood, and the package includes a six-panel full color booklet. Both the booklet and the gatefold features new artwork from Gnaw Their Tongues mastermind Mories, whose artwork continues to get more insane with each new release. Their are images of depravity, masochism, and sadistic enslavement captured here that we're betting are still haunting the poor saps who assembled these at the plant.
And again, the song titles evoke total nightmare visions: "My Orifices Await Ravaging", "Broken Fingers Point Upwards In Vain", "The Stench Of Dead Horses On My Breath And The Vile Of Existence In My Hands", "Gazing At Me Through Tears Of Urine", "Rife With Deep Teeth Marks", and the whopping "The Gnostic Ritual Consumption Of Semen As Embodiment Of Wounds Teared In The Soul". The album opens with a sudden blast of pounding tympani-like percussion and roaring distorted bass, a massive blackened dirge wading through a swirling storm of metal smashing against metal, howls of anguish and terror, bursts of majectic brass fanfare and distortion and epic string sections struggling to emerge from the chaos, then turning into a sea of tense strings and choral voices spreading out towards the end that creates a less noisy but still totally evil atmopshere before becoming devoured at last by the bulldozing black industrial doom. Then it's on to "Verbrannt und verflucht", a mechanical black dirge filled with darkly beautiful orchestral strings and stumbling chaotic drumming, weaving back and forth between a crushing lopsided industrial groove and bombastic riffage that's shot through with brief sections of shimmering ambient drift and echoing chimes and harsh whispered vocals.
The next track opens with an immense deep bassline, like the shuddering tones of a massive bowed cello rumbling through an underground cave system, then launches into another stumbling industrial groove, like a broken Godflesh track draped in harrowing Bernard Herrmann strings, dissonant riffage and some of the albums most overt black metal style vocals, a seriously pissed-off ripped-throat shriek soaring over the sludge. Halfway through, the song turns into a a gripping cinemtatic dirge, just heavy drums and looped strings and ominous bassline spreading out over several minutes, then sinking back into a morass of charred distorted drone, cello and weeping female vocals towards the end. "Stench" juxtaposes a reading of a poem from Gustave Flaubert over monstrous slow-motion doom, and " L’Ange qui annonce la fin du temps" reveals a seething mass of murderous whispers and demonic black ambience, deep pounding kettledrums echoing through the pit, dissonant piano and Lustmordian darkness swirling with swarms of atonal strings and hovering drones.
A heavy rhythmic orchestral loops opens "Gazing" and leads this track into one of the album's most "grooving" moments, a massive winding doom riff working its way across pitch-black film-score strings and later joined by scathing blackened vocals. "Rife" starts off with a full minute of granular black noise before dropping in to a chaotic lurching off-time riff and a churning maelstrom of distorted electronics and looped orchestral stabs, but evolves into dreamy dark ambience laced with piano and hushed female vocals in it's second half, then exploding into a monstrous speaker-shredding bass-heavy drone at the end.
And then as if things couldn't get any more terrifying and nightmarish, the title track appears, opening with a distant female voice screaming for help (a sample I recognize but can't place off of the top of my head), her frantic screams repeating over and over and over as the vicious black doom riffage and industrial percussion pours forth, massive blasts of brass fanfares and dense strings piled on top, the sound absolutely suffocating. But then four minutes in, the doomy heaviness and strings drop out suddenly and we're left with minimal fluttering drones and slow dissonant chords being smashed out of a piano for a minute, a brief moment of almost-calm, and then the drums begin to pound and the orchestral sounds and distorted riffage crashes back in with an epic final hook that's one of the most majestic moments on the album, almost sounding like My Dying Bride but drowned in noise and filthy buzzing bass and psychotic strings.
Finally, "Gnostic Ritual" closes the album with a simple two-chord bass riff over pounding, heavily echoing drums, a blackened dubby doomscape filled with super distorted shrieks and harsh noisy ambience, slow and crushing and utterly depressing, and as the track continues the stripped down industrial dirge is slowly joined by waves of rumbling orchestral percussion, distant warning sirens, murky strings and suspended high pitched drones that builds in intensity until finally fading out on a smoking trail of crackling feedback and distorted bass.

GNAW THEIR TONGUES
Collected Atrocities 2005-2008
CD Double

Quote from label: " The first disc is mostly comprised of the 2008 For All Slaves...A Song Of False Hope EP that came out on Burning World Records, a six song blast of garbled, hateful screams bleeding across plumes of haunting French horns and sorrow-filled strings, that sad orchestral beauty quickly becoming twisted and torn apart by Mories' plodding, blown-out black doom. Drums lurch and stumble through a haze of dungeon reverb, as fragments of obscure samples are cut apart and stitched into haunting loops and melodies, while mad choirs howl in the depths as they go blind with the sight of surfacing abominations. This stuff remains some of his most harrowing material, the tracks stumbling blindly into each other, malformed malevolent death-dirges that lumber with a putrid mindless power, erupting into gales of almost free-jazz style drumming within a storm of corrupted electronics and terrifying atonal strings. And yet glimmers of a strange transcendent beauty break through the gruesome blackened riffage and rabid screaming, fuzz-shrouded melodies that swarm up from the charnel depths of tracks like "A Fiery Deluge", rays of elegiac power that break upon the inchoate nightmares that scuttle and scurry through each track. The EP climaxes with the clattering black metal of "For All Slaves...A Song Of False Hope II", a thrashing shamble of distorted bass and hiss-drenched melody that also has a strangely shoegazey feel, akin to his work with Seirom, and one of my favorite GTT tracks out of his whole catalog.
Disc two features even older material, the three-song Horse Drawn Hearse EP from 2006 (originally released as an ultra-limited CDR), and the three-song Preferring Human Skin Over Animal Fur cassette that came out on Epicene Sound System in 2007. Both of these releases marked a developing sound, a more stripped-down version of what Gnaw Their Tongues would eventually become, yet even this formative material is fucking ferocious, most of the tracks clambering across the disc as filthy, noise-damaged doom monstrosities, smeared in bizarre, bleary samples and distant screams, ghostly theremins like something out of a Jess Franco film wisping around the distant Neubatenesque clank of metal. The handful of compilation tracks seethe with as much evil as the EP material, booming war-horns resounding over crushing riffs that uncoil like monstrous oily tentacles, blasts of bone-rattling drone and distorted noise smashing through skittering discordant strings. And the final track is one that virtually no-one has heard before now, a fifteen-minute epic called "Circles Of The Abyss" that was never formally released, vast and dreadful, venturing into dark ambient territory with rolling waves of black orchestral drift, sweeping out into the cosmos across pulsating synths, the sound blotting out the stars, erupting at intervals into blasts of crushing, horn-drenched doom or soaring operatic female voices, as cinematic as anything I've heard from Mories, and a perfect close to this collection.
Comes in digipack packaging, featuring reproductions of Mories's original skin-crawling artwork"

GNAW THEIR TONGUES
L'Arrivée de la Terne Mort Triomphante
CD Digipack

Quote from label: "One of the extreme metal/industrial underground's most unique bands, Gnaw Their Tongues arises again with a new album of majestic, orchestral death-terror called L'arrivée de la Terne Mort Triomphante, a series of five hymns to the death shroud, a celebration of dissolution. Between Penderecki and pitch-black doom filth, pulverizing and intensely evil.
Of course, this is essential for fans of previous Gnaw Their Tongues albums, but it's equally recommended to fans of both abstract blackened weirdness of bands like Emit, Abruptum, and Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, and the bleak Wagnerian industrial of In Slaughter Natives and Shinjuku Thief. Like the previous two Gnaw Their Tongues releases on Crucial Blast, this comes in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket (which is exclusive to the North American release of this disc)."

MELANCHOHOLICS
Masking My Monkeys
EP

Quote from label: The MELANCHOHOLICS are a german trio producing "thick atmospheric darkness" as they call it. With a background rooted in Death Metal & Grindcore as well as in Industrial, they still use guitar, bass & electronic sounds nowadays, but their aim is to explore the realms of loneliness and melancholy by sculpting almost filmic soundtrackish atmospheres with not much aggression anymore. This is their first vinyl-release and both tracks are filled with beautiful accordeon drones, desert-like guitars, electronic sounds and voice-samples (for the experienced: on the second track "MESSAGE FOR THE OPERATOR" you might recognize a very famous old man). Thus they are enlarging the "classic" drone sound in a very fruitful way.

MICROWAVES
Contagion Euristic
CD

In the anti-tradition of whitebread Bay Area thrash metal, the violent morass of New York no wave, and a familiarity with Ralph Records / THE RESIDENTS insanity, Microwaves draws from a palette that is somehow as wide as it seems limited. Spiked skronk-infested guitars spit tonality-impaired riffs like so much chaff from a surgically calibrated tree shredder, while a propulsive fretless bass assault is jammed through all manner of alien effects, often rendering it as more a bowel-rumbling presence than an actual instrument. The percussive cyborg clatter and MICROWAVE's paranoid dual vocal attack serve to further blast MICROWAVES' dystopian thrash into the outer void. Features former 1985/CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION/CONELRAD/FATE OF ICARUS personnel.

NOISE DREAMS MACHINA
In / Out
EP

Quote from label: "NOISE DREAMS MACHINA is the project of Spanish artist OSCAR MARTIN. Now living & studying in Berlin & Barcelona, he is currently exploring the possibilities of homemade software with free tools for sound deconstrucion and realtime performance.
IN & OUT is his first vinyl release and uses a wide range of environmental recordings which are processed digitally in more "electro-acoustic" ways. This leads to a balance between "Drone" and "Electro-Acoustic" where the acoustic potential of conventional reality is enlarged via digital processing. In his own words: "It brings attention to the peripheral zones of the sound phenomenon". Through intense mutation & deconstruction of acoustic materials a new or previously hidden meaning can be revealed for the blind spot of our perception.

SKULLFLOWER
Pure Imperial Reform
CD

quote from label: "New Skullflower CD now available on Turgid Animal Records. Recorded last year live on an Antwerpen radio station comes this new guitar wall "composition" from Matthew Bower and Lee Stokoe. This is a real CD (a first for Turgid Animal) limited to 1000 copies with artwork desinged by MB himself and pro-printed on quality grey paper in standard jewel cases. This is a seriously solid release and is for fans of modern Skullflower recordings and anyone who just loves a good harsh racket!"

SONIC SURGEON
46
CD Digisleeve

Enigmatically entitled 46 – 46th street, minute, year, or something else altogether – this experimental album encompasses a wide array of contemporary influences, from rock to noise. Mainly electro, even when pastiching the most classic of rock (making for a nice exercise in style in “Don’t believe in rock ‘n’ roll”), Atlan’s project combines the energy of rock, the irony of punk, and retains from noise music a taste for the outer limits of sound.

Fiery and spontaneous, the album penetrates variety of sound landscapes without ever changing tone. Insistent, apocalyptic sequences (from “Irreligion” to the blast-off countdown of “16 bits”) lead into strong, sharp tribal airs (“Same old song”), Japanese drums and chants – and then suddenly, the ghost of a central European violin appears to inflect the insistent vibrations of a Velvet-style intro (“Velvet”, appropriately enough).

On the album’s more experimental tracks, waves of signals, sounds and archaic animal calls seem to seep out from below the earthly surface (“Sous terre”). And shifting back from land to sky, subsequent tracks instantly add further dimensions in shimmering layers. The journey comes to an end in nearly shamanesque fashion, to the rhythm of a body drifting from life – a sonorous as I lay dying in which heartbeats become the only anchoring point in a universe falling apart (“Faux-semblants”).

As a bonus, there is a David Lynch-style video by Magali Marc for the track “Irreligion”, in which an oppressive series of black and white shots evoke a hunting scene, a war set to break out. Lenses, binoculars and other visual devices conceal the protagonists and widen the gap with reality, while through a loudspeaker, an imperious voice intones a serious of incomprehensible warnings. Then come the deafening rhythm and unexpected sound of an instrument invented by Sonic Surgeon, a sort of horn with a powerful, modulated tone that relaunches the offensive, lifts the weight of the oppressive layers, and sets off toward a blazing, dissonant dawn.

+++Additional track: “To the River”, a dub-step variation on the theme of bewitchment by Sasqwash, with Atlan on flute, recorded in a lightning session in Senseless Records’s Arsenal studio.

This deft, sustained album is the product of a collaboration between two musicians who have already established themselves as solo artists in different musical and cultural domains – Japanese low-fi and European experimental, or vice-versa. The result is a pared-down sound that avoids showing off and keeps technology to a minimum, striving to focus on the realm of the body, pursue vital rhythms, and embody sensation with a sort of authority and breezy precision.

About Atlan, alias Sonic Surgeon

“Sonic Surgeon” came into being in London in 2008, but carries musical traces of an earlier musical life in the last century…

In the meantime, the surgeon of sound had found new life under the name Atlan as a communications consultant in the late 1980s, as a sometimes-lumberjack, and above all, as a painter since 1990.

A historic figure in artists’ squats, Atlan was at Pôle Pi (1997), Alter Nation, and the Croustie’s “gallery” on Avenue Montaigne, among others. Traces of his passage can be seen on a variety of industrial wasteland walls, in Lisbon, in Kassel for Documenta X, and in Esch/Alzette (Luxembourg). On canvas, he has exhibited at the Galerie Horizon in Paris, the Electron Libre, the Espace Beaurepaire in early 2010, and finally, the Miroiterie squat, where he is currently working, and will continue to do so until expulsion… A documentary was made on his work by Lily Tournay (“Atlan, Paintings or Mirrors?”, 2009), but the streets of Paris know him first and foremost as a mystifying character, the Sheep of Belleville, a little urban legend that made the waves of Arte Radio (2010):

Sonic Surgeon’s tunes were heard in England and Scotland in the summer of 2009, and he regularly plays in France, both alone and in noise-oriented groups like LETOH, Rumble Crumble, and Iniram Oniram (available on myspace). Prior to this, he worked with Japanese painter and musician Iro Doï, delicate sculptor of electronic layers, for the album, which was recorded in seclusion in Saint-Loup-de-Naud in the winter of 2009.

SPAZMATIC[K] SPELL
Different state & Sigill
CD Digipack

This album, dedicated to A.O. Spare include 60 minutes of pure magic[k]al sounds conceived by two projec[k]ts: Different State and Sigill. Each of them represents a slightly different approach, although they are both connected by mystic[k]al, alc[k]emical, ritual character.
Marchoff (Different State) describes his music as alchembient. This sums his work up perfectly. It’s a mix of illbient a bit in the vein of Coil or Psychic TV, a great deal of alchemical incantations and moans, there’s a lot of elements so characteristic for Different State. In conciving the following material, Marchoff was aided by Laura Marchoff (angelic[k] voice, custom made generator A-23), Tom Westbum (clarinet, sax, alto sax, trumpet) and Janusz Sokolnicki (tube AMP, lead guitar).
Sigill is a project consisting of brat salo and Nantur-a duo creating electronic lunar spaces and astral soundscapes using samples and ancient instruments. The material was conceived during winter solstice 2006.

The disc is packaged in a deluxe 3-panel digipak.

STELLAR DESCENT
...fading
CD

Quote from label: "Fading is an atmospheric, psychedelic, approximately hour-long black metal journey inspired by a specific event: Witnessing seemingly endless migrating water fowl at a local wildlife refuge that supports the Pacific Flyway. I found myself completely enveloped by something almost unbelievable. Infinite expanses of water fowl plastered against a blazing sky, taking to flight in huge, thunderous flocks that seemed to shake whatever lay below. The sheer numbers and sounds were like nothing I had ever imagined. Toward the evening, the sky turned a vibrant shade of yellow and orange and the coastal range turned to stark silhouette. And at that moment, it all seemed too much. I was just lost in this completely surreal, textured scene. I was faded to reality—absent drugs.
Fading was recorded in December 2014. The album consists of one approximately hour-long song. All drums, vocals, and guitars were performed and recorded by A. Field recordings are from the Pacific Flyway refuge."

THE BEING
Through Madness to Mercury
CD Digipack

High-quality release with a 20 page booklet.

The Being’s debut album deals with the concept of inner-transformation and personal growth on a spiritual level by combining the arts of philosophy & poetry, music & magic into one coherent whole.

A musical style perhaps best described as neofolk / neocabaret - though not strictly bound to a genre as such - takes the listener on a journey through a the realms of self-transformation with a strange, unworldly and experimental mixture of moodswings that intentionally shock the mind and purposefully disturb the mental balance.

TREPHINE
s/t
CD

"Years in the making... For the uninitiated, Trephine play a unique blend of metal/prog/punk/ noise/math rock which finds their instrumental, guitar/bass/drums assault joined by found object percussion. To help make their strongest release yet, Trephine called upon three masters of their craft-- producer/engineer, Jon Smulyan, mastering engineer, Alan Douches, and visual artist, Stephen Kasner. Slayer riffs and Propane tank percussion collide for eight tracks of pure surgical doom!!!"
